Virginia Tech's Smith and Virginia's Hurley Earn ACC Swimming Performer of the Week Honors
Jan. 27, 2009 GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia Tech senior Sarah Smith and Virginia senior Ryan Hurley have been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week. Smith set a new ACC record in the 50 free while Hurley won six events in a pair of Virginia dual match victories. Smith, a native of McGaheysville, Va., posted the fastest time in ACC history in the 50 free with a time of 22.18 seconds. She also posted a time of 50.06 seconds in the 100 free to take first place in the event and help the Hokies to a pair of dual match wins over Georgia Tech and UNC Wilmington. Hurley, a Potomac, Md. native, scored four individual event wins and a pair of relay victories in Virginia's wins over North Carolina and Duke. He won both the 100 breast (55.61 and 57.62) and 200 breast (1:58.31 and 2:04.33) against both the Tar Heels and Blue Devils. He also assisted in the Cavaliers pair of wins in the 200 medley relay (1:30.43 and 1:32.09).
The Virginia Tech women's team will close out the regular season on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. on the road against Pittsburgh. Virginia will close the regular season a day later with a noon meet on the road against Pittsburgh.
