![]() North Carolina's Kinderwater and Virginia's Shaw Collect Swimming and Diving Weekly Honors
Jan. 22, 2008 GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina's Joe Kinderwater and Virginia's Liz Shaw have been selected Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week after helping their respective teams secure wins over ranked opponents last weekend. Earning the men's award for the second week in a row, Kinderwater turned in another career performance as No. 15 North Carolina secured a 151-149 victory over 14th-ranked Virginia on Sunday. The freshman from Lancaster, Pa., won the 1000-yard freestyle in 8:58.09, registering the second-fastest time in the event in ACC history. His time broke the school record (9:02.38) set by Chip Peterson set in 2007 and was also less than four seconds off the ACC record set by Virginia's Fran Crippen in 2003 at 8:54.56. Kinderwater also swam a personal best in the 500-yard freestyle with a winning time of 4:26.04. His times in both events currently rank at the top of the league this season. A first-year from Richmond, Va., Shaw won three individual events and recorded a trio of NCAA times to help the No. 15 Cavaliers upend 10th-ranked North Carolina 191-109 over the weekend. She broke the ACC record in the 200 butterfly with an NCAA "A" time of 1:57.04 and posted a pair of NCAA "B" marks for first place in the 100 fly (54.74) and 200 individual medley (2:02.38). The league weekly honor is a first for Shaw. Virginia will be back in action this Sunday, as the Cavaliers host Pittsburgh at 11 a.m. North Carolina breaks for two weeks before returning to the pool, hosting NC State in a conference meet on Feb. 1. -ACC-
