Maryland Women Sweep UMBC, Towson The University of Maryland swimming and diving team swept intrastate rivals UMBC and Towson Saturday at Eppley Recreation Natatorium. The women's squad edged UMBC, 217-83, and handed Towson its first loss of the season, 184.5-115.5. Maryland (5-1) had a hefty amount of event winners Friday as the Terps tallied a total of ten top finishes. Leading the way for Maryland was Jen Vogel, who captured both the 100 (56.71) and 200 fly (2:02.25) while helping the 200 medley relay (1:45.79) squad along with Alexa Hamilton, Annie Fittin and Megan Lafftery to a victory. Sophomore Ginny Glover also racked up a pair of individual wins in the 100 back (56.40) and 500 free (4:56.53) while aiding the 400 free relay along with Laura Wright, Fittin and Lafferty to a first-place in finish. Hamilton continued her dominance in the 200 breast, winning the event in 2:19.65 while finishing second in the 100 breast (1:05.80). Laura Wright captured the 100 free (50.72) while freshman Katie Hughes won the 200 back (2:06.70). Terp Men Split with Local Rivals Saturday The Maryland men's swimming and diving team earned a split Saturday after defeating Towson but narrowly falling to UMBC at Eppley Recreation Natatorium. The Terps had a stellar day in the distance events, capturing both the 1000 and 500 free. Freshman Nick Evans won the 1000 free (9:38.58) with senior Brian Honore finishing second (9:45.71). Chris Rouchard was victorious in the 500 free (4:37.66) with Honore sliding in with a second-place finish (4:41.67). Maryland also performed well in the mid-distance, earning six top-three finishes Saturday. Andrew Relihan won the 200 back (1:51.73) with Alex Spina finishing third (1:54.28). Rouchard (1:43.00) and Aleksandar Damjanic went 2-3 in the 200 free. Sean Stewart won the 200 fly (1:52.27) with Roger Dent taking third (1:53.65).
