Tech finishes weekend undefeated with sweeps of Duke and Miami
After a pair of wins over Kentucky on Friday, the Virginia Tech H2Okie teams showed no fatigue in competing on consecutive days and came out dominant to finish the weekend undefeated, compiling three wins against ACC competition on Saturday at War Memorial Pool. The H2Okie women defeated Duke, 174-126, and Miami, 208-86, while the men posted a 180-112 victory over the Blue Devils. The victories were the first conference wins of the season for Tech, as the men posted 12 top finishes and the women added seven.

Tech opened the day with back-to-back wins in the 200 medley relay races. The women garnered the top two spots, while the men finished first and third. The Tech men remain unbeaten this season in the medley relay, posting their fifth-consecutive top finish. The women would also end the day with a victory in the 200 free relay, touching in at 1:35.27, in their first time competing in the relay event this season. The men took a close second to Duke in the 200 free relay.

Blake Trabuchi-Downey earned his third victory of the two-day competition, taking first in the men’s 1650 freestyle, posting a H2Okies’ season-best time of 15:58.39. Griffin Lutterbein placed second for the men, while Erika Hajnal topped the women in the mile with a runner-up finish in 16:43.01.


 

 

Seminoles Tame the LSU Tigers
Florida State faced their stiffest competition of the season when the LSU Tigers came to the Morcom Aquatics Center Saturday. The Seminoles fought hard and ultimately both the men and women triumphed over the Tigers. The men defeated LSU 156-144, and the women won 162-138.

The Florida State men's team claimed first place in seven events. Andy Hodgson shined for the Seminoles with victories in the 200 free (1:39.70) and the 200 back (1:48.92). Hodgson also came up big for Florida State in the final event of the meet, the 400 freestyle relay. With only a lap to go, he successfully came from behind to seal the win for FSU with a time of 3:01.75. Rob Holderness also won two individual events, the 100 breast (56.27) and the 200 breast (2:02.99). On the diving side, Terry Horner won the one-meter dive with a score of 387.82 and Landon Marzullo claimed first in the three-meter dive (452.31).

Six athletes on the women's team combined for six victories during the meet. Marissa Harrington started things off with a win in the 1000 free with a time of 10:80.52. Jocelyn Phillips claimed first in the 200 free (1:49.13), Stephanie Sarandos won the 200 back (1:59.41) and Kristine Polley won the 200 breast (2:18.62). Freshman Caroline Smith took first place in the 500 free with a time of 4:58.79. On the boards Aleia Monden claimed first in the three-meter diving event (293.47).

NC State Sweeps Davidson
The NC State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept the Davidson Wildcats on Saturday, Nov. 7, setting three Cannon Pool records along the way. On the women’s side Anna Linkenauger set a new pool record in the 400 individual medley, while Patrice Dason, Ashley Richter, Allison Hendren and Marifrances Henley combined to set a new standard in the 200-freestyle relay. Brandon Kingston established a new record on the men’s side in the 1000 freestyle.

The Wolfpack men stayed unbeaten and moved to 3-0 (2-0 ACC) with its 167-100 decision, while the women climbed to 4-1 (1-1 ACC) on a 157-129 score.

Linkenauger’s 4:22.16 set a new pool record at Davidson and stood as the top time in the 400 individual medley, as did the 1:36.53 put up by Dason, Richter, Hendren and Henley in the 200-freestyle relay. Earlier in the day Dason, Linkenauger, Meg Thompson and Richter won the 200-medley relay on a 1:48.11.

Tar Heels Take Down Terps In Dual Meet
The men and women's swimming and diving teams remain undefeated in the ACC after swimming past the Maryland Terapins Friday afternoon. The Tar Heels improved their records to 3-0 in the conference. The UNC men's team defeated Maryland 171 - 98 and the women won 166 - 117

The Tar Heel men dominated the meet with top performances in 14 out of 15 events, including exhibition swims.

Junior Tommy Wyher led the men to a quick start with a win in the 100-yard backstroke followed in second by Junior Josh Hafkin and in third, Sophomore Jim Flannery. Wyher finished with an NCAA-B qualifying time of 48.19.

H2Okie men and women post solid day to defeat Kentucky
The Virginia Tech swimming and diving teams combined for 19 first-place finishes, helping the H2Okies to a sweep of Kentucky at War Memorial Pool on Friday afternoon. The H2Okie men defeated the Wildcats, 161.5-136.5, while the Tech women earned a 176-122 victory. Both squads improved to 3-2 on the season.

The H2Okies continued their dominance in the men’s 200 medley relay to open the meet, earning their fourth title of the season as Charlie Higgins, Jonathan Huss, Gregory Mahon and Stephen Hawkins teamed to take first with their second-fastest finish of the year in 1:31.26.

Virginia Tech then swept both 1000 freestyle events, with Erika Hajnal and Blake Trabuchi-Downey earning victories. Hajnal’s victory in 10:18.87 marked her third of the season, as the women took the top four spots. Trabuchi-Downey’s first-place finish in 9:32.11 marked his first title of the season, as he would later take first in the 500 free. Laura Simon and Becky Flora rounded out the top three, respectively, for the women, while Caglar Gokbulut took second for the men, followed by Griffin Lutterbein in third.
