UNC Swimmers & Divers Split Dual Meets With Georgia
The University of North Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams split their dual meets with the University of Georgia Friday afternoon at the Gabrielsen Natatorium inside the Ramsey Center on the UGA campus. The Tar Heel men defeated the Bulldogs 156-144 to post Carolina's first win over Georgia since October 13, 2004 while the Georgia women, runners-up in the 2009 NCAA Championships, defeated the UNC women 160-126.

The Carolina men and Georgia men each won eight events with the Bulldogs winning both relays and six individual events while the Tar Heels won eight individual events. UNC's overall depth and Carolina's dominance on the diving boards helped the Tar Heels compile the necessary points to pull off the 12-point victory. The win was Carolina's first over Georgia since the Tar Heels beat the Bulldogs 176-124 at Koury Natatorium on October 13, 2004.

UNC got individual victories in the 1000-yard freestyle by Joe Kinderwater, the 200-yard freestyle by Wil Singley, the 100 and 200-yard breaststrokes by Vinny Pryor, the 100-yard backstroke by Jim Flannery, the 400-yard individual medley by Tyler Harris and in both diving events with wins by Jake Kinzbach on the one-meter board and David Solarz on the three-meter board. On the women's side, Laura Moriarty was the sole individual event winner as she captured the 200-yard breaststroke but Tar Heel head coach Rich DeSelm was still impressed with the effort of his women's squad.

Florida State Races Past Rattlers
The Florida State men's and women's swimming and diving teams returned to the Morcom Aquatics Center this afternoon to take on in-city rival FAMU.

The Seminoles easily handled the small Rattler squad as the men won 79 to 58 and the women by a score of 76 to 47.

On the men's side Florida State's swimmers and divers earned the fast times and highest scores in every event. Ian Rowe continued to shine in the men's second meet of the season, earning wins in the 1000 freestyle (9:28.18) and 100 backstroke (53.39). Junior Landon Marzullo continued to shine for the Seminoles as he won the one-meter (399.90) and three-meter diving events (425.85).

Terps Open Season with Win
The Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving teams began the 2009-10 season on a high note Friday, defeating Johns Hopkins in its season opener at Eppley Natatorium.

The women's squad topped the Blue Jays, 187-67. The Terps were led by Alisa Kurbatova, who qualified for the NCAA Regionals with a 266.25 in the 1-meter. Kurbatova has now etched her name as a qualifier in the all three diving events - 1-meter, 3-meter, and platform - at regionals.

The men picked up their first dual meet win of the year, 146.5-91.5.

NC State Swimming & Diving Strong in Season Opener

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The NC State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams started its 2009-10 season the right way, grabbing conference victories on Saturday, Oct. 24. The men (2-0, 2-0 ACC) topped both Duke (171-129) and Maryland (198-102), while the women (1-1, 1-1 ACC) split, downing the Blue Devils (155-143) and falling to the Terrapins (179-121).

The women’s roster put up four all-time top-10 times - including three in individual action from Marifrances Henley, Jen Kopenitz and Morgan Robertson – while Hudson Rains qualified for the NCAA diving zones for the men’s team. Henley and Matt Voell also won events in their collegiate debuts.

Gaites Brown, Dan Forsythe, Voell and Conor Brennan started the men off by taking first in the 400-medley relay on a 3:23.99, which Mason McGee followed by swiping first in both the 1000 freestyle (9:35.22) and 200 freestyle (1:39.86). Kevin Woodhull-Smith took second in the 200 freestyle with a 1:41.40, and Travis Martinez’s 1:41.41 was good for third.

Swimming Finds Limited Success in ACC Opener

DURHAM, N.C. – On Saturday, the Blue Devils opened interleague competition, slated for a double-dual meet against Maryland and N.C. State.

The men’s team picked up its first ACC win of the 2009-10 season, soundly defeating host Maryland by a margin of 194-106. However, the men also suffered their first loss of the campaign at the hands of N.C. State by a score of 129-171.

The women’s team was unable to record a win in the opening weekend of ACC competition. They fell to Maryland by a score of 136.5-163.5 and were edged by N.C. State 143-155. The usual suspects led the Duke scoring effort.
