Oct. 21, 2007 Miami, Florida A&M at Florida State TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- Terry Horner's not going to give up his National Championship quietly. The sophomore from Orlando, Fla. set a new school record and broke the 400 point mark for the first time in his career on the 1 meter board with a score of 400.75 as Florida State defeated Florida A&M and Miami on Friday afternoon. "Last weekend at Georgia Tech he had a great performance and this weekend he topped it," said diving coach Patrick Jeffrey. "Having your best score and breaking the school record at the second dual meet of the year; and he's not even in diving shape yet, we're very pleased with that and we're looking forward to a huge year for him." Horner, the defending NCAA champion on the 1m board, also won the three meter competition with a score of 387.60 leading Florida State to three wins in the four diving events. Sophomore Katie Sirounis (Indian Harbor Beach, Fla.) was victorious on the one meter board (262.20) as the Seminoles went toe-to-toe with one of the best diving programs in the country.
BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams best Virginia Tech Saturday in a dual meet. The Cavalier men won 172-128 while the Virginia women beat the Hokies 188-110. The UVa women broke four pool records which included the 200 medley relay, 1000 freestyle, 200 butterfly and 200 backstroke events. The relay team of Mei Christensen, Ellie Freeman, Stephanie Glover and Jessica Lewis swam the 200 medley in 1:43.59. Jenn Narum won the 1000 free in a time of 10:03.15 and Liz Shaw claimed the 200 fly in 2:00.90. Christensen claimed her second record of the event in the 200 back, finishing in a time of 2:01.22. Matt McLean and John Azar led the Cavalier men with two wins apiece. Azar claimed the 200 individual medley (2:05.49) and the 200 breaststroke (2:05.47). McLean, meanwhile, won both the 100 (46.04) and 200 (1:39.85) freestyle events.
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Two wins in one day. That's what the NC State men's swimming and diving program picked up to begin the 2007-08 season in Greenville, N.C., on Saturday, Oct. 20. The Wolfpack topped both East Carolina (204-96) and William & Mary (234-64), dominating throughout the entire competition. In all, State won 14 of 16 total events. The Pack now stands at 2-0 on the young season. In the relays, Taylor Goodwin, Day Forsythe, Mike Seiferth and Dan Glauber finished second in the 200-medley with a 1:34.87. Travis Martinez, Goodwin, Brian Crowder and Glauber later won the 200-freestyle on a 1:25.68. Women: NCSU 194, WM 106; ECU 174, NCSU 124 GREENVILLE, N.C. - The NC State women's swimming and diving team opened its 2007-08 season by splitting two contests against East Carolina and William & Mary on Saturday, Oct. 20, in Greenville, N.C. The Pack topped the Tribe (194-106), but fell to the Pirates (174-124). The team now stands at 1-1 on the young season. Erica Smith, Jess Ward, Patrice Dason and Lucy Lindsey finished second in the 200- medley relay with a 1:47.96 to start things off. Dason, Ashley Richter, Amanda Panty and Lindsey later wrapped up the night with a second-place showing in the 200-free relay with a 1:37.84.
DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke swimming and diving teams opened their 2007-08 seasons with commanding victories on Saturday afternoon, as the Blue Devil men defeated UNC Wilmington, 187-109, and the Duke women defeated UNCW, 199-96, and Richmond, 190-93.5, at Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion. The Blue Devil men received victories from sophomore Andrew Clark (1000 free - 9:43.45), sophomores Murillo Adrados (100 back - 53.49) and Tim McKeever (200 back - 1:55.24), and freshman Nick Garvy (100 fly - 51.99), while senior Andy Osterland (200 free - 1:43.70, 100 free - 47.93) and freshman Spencer Booth (200 fly - 1:55.35, 500 free - 4:45.71) were double-winners for Duke. On the women's side, freshman Ashley Twichell shattered a Duke school record in the 1000 free by nearly seven seconds, finishing in 9:59.15 for a first-place finish in her first collegiate outing. Twichell also took first in the 200 free (1:54.68).
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept a dual meet against the Colgate Raiders, Saturday, Oct. 20. The men's team sported a 160.5-119.5 win, and now owns a 2-0 overall record. A ten-point victory by the women's team, 152-142, improves their record to 2-1. Freshman John Maloy earned Outstanding Performer for the men's team by winning three events, totaling 27 points for the Eagles. Maloy won the 1,000 free (9:55.86), 500 free (4:48.73) and 400 medley (4:12.55). Junior Caroline Byron won three events (200 free, 100 free and 50 free) totaling 27 points, which earned her Outstanding Performer of the meet.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College men's and women's swimming and diving teams split a non-conference meet against the Loyola-Maryland Greyhounds on Sunday, Oct. 21. The women continued their success, upping their record to 3-1 on the season with a 212-88 victory. The loss for the men was their first of the season, dropping a 202-92 decision. The men are now 2-1 on the year. Caroline Byron led the way for the Eagles, winning both the 500 free (5:18.29) and 200 free (1:56.95). Valerie Crisp earned Outstanding Performance honors with wins in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. Crisp won the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.13 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:32.65. John Maloy kept his freshman success rolling, winning two events, which totaled 18 points for the Eagles. The freshman won the 500 free (4:46.91) and the 200 medley (2:00.04) along with taking BC's Outstanding Performer honors.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened their 2007-08 home schedule by sweeping the Brandeis Judges, Wednesday evening in a non-conference meet. The men (1-0, 0-0 ACC) posted a 149-109 decision, while the women (2-0, 0-0 ACC) tallied a 140-121 win. On the men's team, senior Alex Zucco and freshman John Maloy each won two events. Zucco played first in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions and placed third in the 100 backstroke, totaling 21 points. Maloy placed first in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. The two victories for Maloy were the first of his collegiate career. On the women's side, the Eagles were led by Devon Kelly. The freshman won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, totaling 18 points.
