Georgia Tech sweeps men's honors and receives one women's award.
Feb. 22, 2002 ACC MEN'S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD Georgia Tech sweeps ACC Men's Indoor honors - Grover Hinsdale named ACC Coach of the Year, Brendon Mahoney earns ACC Most Valuable Performer while Brian Ford captures ACC Rookie of the Year Title Greensboro, N.C. - The Georgia Tech Men's Indoor Track and Field team swept the Atlantic Coast Conference indoor Track and Field honors as voted by the leagues nine head coaches. After the Yellow Jackets performance this past weekend at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C., head coach Grover Hinsdale was named ACC Coach of the Year, while Brendon Mahoney and Brian Ford earn Player and Rookie of the Year, respectively. Hinsdale, in his ninth season at the helm of the Yellow Jacket program, earns his first ACC Coach of the Year honor. Georgia Tech gathered 94 points at the championship, the highest point total by the Jackets men's program since 1988. This is the first ACC Indoor Track and Field Men's Coach of the Year honor for a Georgia Tech coach. Mahoney, a Yellow Jacket junior out of Cumming, Ga., was the recipient of the ACC's Most Valuable Performer after he captured first place honors in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:51.99. He also finished second in the mile run with a time of 4:10.96. He was named All-ACC for his performances in both events. Ford, a freshman from Ashland, Va., competed in the 400 meter dash and the 4x400 meter relay. He was a member of the first place 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:13.58. He also finished sixth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 48.69. He was also the youngest participant in the finals of the 400 meter dash, racing against all juniors and seniors. ACC WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD Georgia Tech's Alan Drosky named ACC Coach of the Year North Carolina's Shalane Flanagan garners ACC Most Valuable Performer and Tar Heel Erin Donohue earns ACC Rookie of the Year Title Greensboro, N.C. - The Georgia Tech Women's Indoor Track and Field team won its first Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field title this past weekend in Chapel Hill, N.C. After the Yellow Jackets performance this past weekend, head coach Alan Drosky was named ACC Coach of the Year, while Tar Heels Shalane Flanagan and Erin Donohue earned Player and Rookie of the Year, respectively. The above awards are voted on by the leagues nine head coaches. Drosky, in his seventh season at the helm of the Yellow Jacket program, earns his first ACC Coach of the Year honor. Georgia Tech gathered 122 points at the championship recording the program's first ACC Indoor Track and Field Title. The 122 points was also the highest score ever recorded by the Yellow Jackets in the 16 year history of the championship. Flanagan, a Tar Heel sophomore out of Marblehead, Mass., was the recipient of the ACC's Most Valuable Performer after she captured first place honors in the mile run with a time of 4:42.35, the 3000 meters with a time 9:19.85 and as the anchor of the distance medley relay team with a time of 11:39.98. Her championship time in the 3000 meters qualifies her automatically for the upcoming NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Flanagan was also last years ACC Rookie of the Year for Indoor Track and Field. Donohue, a freshman from Haddon Field, N.J., competed in the mile and the 800 meter run. She posted a third place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 2:10.76 and a fourth place time of 4:48.24 in the mile run. Her time in the 800 meters was enough for All-ACC honors while her mile run time provisionally qualifiers her for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. |
