BLACKSBURG, Va. - Clemson won the 2000 ACC Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship on Saturday in Blacksburg, VA. The Tigers scored 168 points for the victory, the second-highest point total in history, and Clemson's highest point total ever at the event. North Carolina finished second with 89 points, and NC State was third with a score of 86.
Senior Shawn Crawford led the Tigers, claiming first place in the 60m and the 200m. His time in the 200m, 20.43, set a new American collegiate record, plus a Clemson and ACC record and is the fastest time in the world this year. The previous ACC and American collegiate record of 20.56 was set by Milton Campbell of North Carolina in 1998. Crawford broke his previous best by .19 at the meet. In the 60m, Crawford posted an automatic qualifying time of 6.62.
Clemson took three of the top four spots in the 60m hurdles, claiming 24 points overall in the event. Tiger junior Sultan Tucker won the event in 7.79, tying the ACC record for the event. Tiger senior Charles Allen was second with a provisional time of 7.85, and Florida State senior Iain Harnden placed third in 7.94.
The Tigers scored 26 points in the 60m dash. Crawford won the event, and freshman David Collins earned All-ACC honors after placing second with a provisional time of 6.70. Wake Forest junior John Stone placed third with a time of 6.80. Clemson scored 25 points in the 200m. Crawford won the event, followed by Wake Forest junior John Stone with a provisional time of 21.23. Tiger sophomore Ato Modibo placed third with a time of 21.38.
NC State senior Tyrone Dozier claimed the ACC Championship in the 400m, winning the event with an automatic qualifying time of 46.15. Tiger Modibo was second with a provisional time of 46.39, and Georgia Tech senior Michael Johnson placed third with a provisional time of 46.74.
Clemson sophomore Fred Sharpe won the 800m in 1:51.79, and Tar Heel junior Jeff Ellis placed second with a time of 1:52.33. Tiger sophomore Mike Connelly was third after finishing the event in 1:52.42.
In the mile run, Georgia Tech freshman Brendon Mahoney placed first with a time of 4:09.25, followed by Wake Forest sophomore Chris Estwanik in second with a time of 4:09.48. Duke's Bill Spierdowis, also a sophomore, was third with a time of 4:10.98.
NC State took the top three positions in the 3,000m. Senior Chan Pons, who won the 5,000m on Friday, won the event in 8:15.48, while junior Chris Dugan placed second with a time of 8:21.69. Senior Abdul Alzindani was third with a time of 8:21.90.
The Georgia Tech 4x400m relay team of Michael Johnson, Sharif Azim, Tosin Tomori and Bryan Swarn won the championship with a time of 3:11.41. Florida State's team of Harnden, Danny Smith, Antonio Martin and Michael Jennings finished second, recording a time of 3:11.63.
Sophomore Christian Bland of Florida State took the ACC Championship in the high jump with a provisional mark of 7'1". Clemson sophomore Doug Ameigh was second after clearing the same mark on a later jump. Freshman Keith Schuler of Georgia Tech placed third with a mark of 6'11 3/4".
Sophomore Brent Callaway of North Carolina won the pole vault with a mark of 16'9 1/2", and Duke junior Seth Benson placed second after clearing the same height on a later jump. Seminole freshman Jeff Atkinson was third with a vault of 16'3 1/2".
Freshman Isaiah Oglesby of NC State led the weight throw competition with an NCAA provisional mark of 64'10 3/4", while sophomore Sal Gigante of North Carolina was second with a throw of 61' 1/4". Sophomore Cliff Neal of Wake Forest placed third at 57'2 1/4".
Florida State junior Joe Allen took first in the triple jump with a provisional mark of 51'6 1/2", and senior Bryan Williams of Clemson was second with a mark of 51'6 1/2". Seminole sophomore Mario Lowe was third with a jump of 51'2 1/4".
The top three individuals in each event earn All-ACC honors, and the top team in each relay event is awarded all-conference honors. Highlights from the meet can be seen on Fox SportSouth on Monday, February 28, at 7 p.m.
