Williamson and Ferrell Earn ACC Men’s Soccer Weekly Honors
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Duke’s Brandon Williamson has been named the ACC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Wake Forest’s Alec Ferrell was tabbed as Defensive Player of the Week.
Williamson led the Blue Devils to a 2-1 double overtime upset of No. 4 Notre Dame. The freshman midfielder from Gainesville, Virginia, scored both of Duke’s goals as the Blue Devils battled from a 1-0 deficit to earn their highest ranked victory since 2014. The goals were the first of his career as a Blue Devil and marked just the second time this season a Duke player has scored two goals in a game. In addition to scoring both goals, Williamson was outstanding on defending in the midfield and played the entire 108 minutes. In the Tuesday night match against Campbell, Williamson played 52 minutes as Duke built a 3-1 lead early in the game.
Ferrell notched back-to-back shutouts last week on the road against South Carolina and at home against Boston College. The redshirt senior from Westlake, Ohio, made three saves in a 1-0 win over the Gamecocks, including a diving stop on a ball bending low and away to keep the game scoreless in the first half. Ferrell made seven saves in 1-0 win over the Eagles, including a stop in the 79th minute when he laid out to stop a heavy shot by Callum Johnson. Ferrell also stopped a shot from point blank by Zeiko Lewis in the 55th minute to preserve Wake Forest’s 1-0 lead. Ferrell has now posted seven shutouts in 11 games played this season.
