ACC Players of the Week Presented by Havoline

GREENSBORO, N.C.—Virginia redshirt junior Blaise Butler (Belvidere, IIl.) became the first Atlantic Coast Conference wrestler to be named the ACC Wrestler of the Week for the second time this season when he was honored for his performance this past weekend.

Butler, ranked seventh nationally at 174 pounds, scored a 3-2 win over Virginia Tech’s Zach Epperly Sunday at the Moss Arts Center in Blacksburg, Va. Epperly was ranked 12th nationally. Butler scored a first period take down and never trailed in the win in the opening bout of Sunday’s match.

Virginia, ranked 12th nationally, dropped a close, 18-16 decision to the 9th-ranked Hokies.

Butler improved his record on the year to 15-2 with the win, his second 3-2 decision over Epperly in 22 days. His record against wrestlers in the Top 25 is 5-2. He was earlier named ACC Wrestler of the Week on Jan. 20. He captured the 2014 ACC title wrestling at 157 pounds, but is competing at 174 this year.

Butler earned selection over NC State junior Nick Gwiazdowski (Delanson, N.Y.) at 285, who had a match-winning pin of North Carolina’s Frank Abbondanza at 3:48 of their bout as the Wolfpack downed UNC 22-18; North Carolina’s John Michael Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), who downed 14th-ranked Pete Renda of NC State and Stephen Loiseau of Drexel at 174 pounds; and Duke sophomore Jacob Kasper (Lexington, Ohio), who defeated three wrestlers in leading the Blue Devils to a trio of dual match wins over Drexel, American University and Appalachian State.
