184-Pound Sophomore Scores Upset of Second-Ranked Vic Avery of Edinboro
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) — Virginia Tech sophomore Zack Zavatsky Tuesday was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week after leading the 10th-ranked Hokies to a pair of dual match wins over 17th-ranked Pitt ad Edinboro and recording an upset of the nation’s No. 2-ranked wrestler in Vic Avery of Edinboro.
Zavatsky, from Latrobe, Pa., recorded a major decision with an 11-3 triumph over Pitt’s Zach Bruce in the Hokies’ 28-7 ACC win over the Panthers in Pittsburgh on Friday. Then on Sunday, he led Tech’s 29-7 win at Edinboro with a 3-1 sudden victory decision over Avery.
Ranked 14th nationally before his two wins, Zavatsky moved up to No. 7 this week in the InterMat national rankings.
He was chosen from a pool of nominees that also included Conner Hartmann of Duke, Evan Henderson of North Carolina and Sean Fausz of NC State.
Hartmann, a redshirt senior from Orchard Park, Wash., won a pair of matches in the 197-pound weight class to boost his overall record to 21-1 on the year. Hartmann recorded a fall against T. James Henderson of Gardner-Webb on Wednesday night, then came back with a 4-3 decision over 10th-ranked Zach Nye of Virginia on Friday. Hartmann, who is ranked fifth nationally this week by InterMat, now has 88 career wins, which ties for eighth on Duke’s career list.
Henderson, a redshirt senior from New Florence, Pa., pinned Chris Yankowich of Virginia at the 2:25 mark of their bout in the Tar Heels’ 27-20 win over the Cavaliers. Henderson improved to 17-4 on the year, which includes eight falls, one of the top totals in the nation. Henderson, who is 10-2 since moving up to the 149-pound weight class, improved to fifth nationally this week in the InterMat national rankings.
Fausz, a redshirt freshman from Alexandria, Ky., keyed the Wolfpack’s win at No. 11 Nebraska with a 5-4 decision over the Cornhuskers’ ninth-ranked Tim Lambert in the 125-pound class. The win by Fausz was his third against a ranked foe this year and first against a Top 10-ranked wrestler. Fausz is unranked by InterMat, which only has a Top 20, but was ranked 24th nationally at 125 in the most recent NCAA Coaches rankings.
All four wrestlers will be competing in the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championship which will be hosted by the University of Virginia on Sunday, March 6. The one-day tournament, which will take place at the John Paul Jones Arena Center in Charlottesville, Va., will begin at 11 a.m.
