Virginia Tech’s Tiernan and North Carolina’s Harris Earn ACC Weekly Honors

Tiernan scores all three of VT’s goals; North Carolina’s Harris makes 13 saves on the weekend

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech senior forward Murielle Tiernan has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while North Carolina redshirt senior goalkeeper Lindsey Harris is this week’s ACC Defensive Player of the Week.

Virginia Tech’s Tiernan scored all three goals for the Hokies this past week. The Ashburn, Virginia, native scored Tech’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss to RV/17 Ohio State on Sept. 1. Tiernan turned around and put away both Hokie goals in the first half en route to a 2-1 win at William & Mary on Sunday. She now has four goals on the season and a school-best 43 goals in her career.

North Carolina’s Harris made 13 saves in two matches to help lead North Carolina to a 1-0-1 weekend with a 0-0 double overtime draw at No. 7/10 Duke and a 2-0 victory over Villanova in the Duke Nike Classic.  The Austin, Texas, native made a career-high 11 saves against the Blue Devils on Friday night, while the Tar Heels allowed 30 shots during the 110 minutes of play. The 30 shots were the most allowed by the Tar Heels in five seasons, and the 11 saves were the most in a single game in UNC history against a varsity level opponent.  It was the most saves in a game since Molly Current had 14 saves against the Virginia Select Team in 1980 (at that time, because of the limited number of varsity teams, UNC had to play club teams as part of its schedule).  On Sunday, Harris played the second half in UNC’s 2-0 win over Villanova.  She made two saves and combined on the shutout with Samantha Leshnak, who made her first career start for the Tar Heels.
