GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia’s Edward Opoku has been named the ACC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Jeff Caldwell was tabbed as Defensive Player of the Week.
Opoku scored the lone goal in Virginia’s upset win Friday night against No. 2 Notre Dame. He intercepted a pass originally sent back toward the Irish defenders near midfield and drove down the field and into the box before weaving and firing a shot past the Irish keeper. The goal was the team-leading fifth of the season for the sophomore forward from Rye, New York.
Caldwell helped Virginia extend its unbeaten run to six matches with solid play in UVA’s midweek draw with Radford and its win against No. 2 Notre Dame. The junior from Todd, North Carolina, tied his career high with seven saves against the Fighting Irish, including five during the second half as Notre Dame brought waves of pressure in search of the equalizing goal. He recorded his fifth clean sheet of the season, with four coming during the last six matches. It is the third straight league weekly award for Caldwell.
