Cavaliers Defeat Nine Top 20 Squads Including No. 1 Ohio State at Clemson Invitational
GREENSBORO, N.C.—Virginia’s First Varsity Four crew was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Crew of the Week Tuesday after defeating nine Top 20 teams including No. 1 Ohio State at last weekend’s Clemson Invitational on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
The Cavaliers, ranked fourth nationally in last week’s Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association poll (CRCA), posted a time of 7:23.7 to defeat Ohio State (7:31.1), Syracuse (7:33.4), 12th-ranked Indiana (7:47.5), 15th-ranked Harvard-Radcliffe (7:36.2), 16th-ranked UCLA (7:48.8) and Dartmouth (7:53.0) on Saturday morning in Clemson.
UVa’s First Varsity Four came back later in the day to post a time of 7:18.8 in defeating 14th-ranked Texas (7:22.9), 16th-ranked UCLA (7:38.0), 19th-ranked Gonzaga (7:37.7), 20th-ranked Minnesota (7:32.3), Dartmouth (7:43.2) and Cornell (7:45.1) on Saturday afternoon.
Finally, on Sunday, Virginia’s Varsity Four recorded their best time of the weekend with a 7:13.1 clocking in besting 10th-ranked Washington State (7:20.6), 20th-ranked Minnesota (7:26.9), 15th-ranked Harvard-Radcliffe (7:27.1), 18th-ranked Oregon State (7:36.3), Penn (7:26.0) and Oklahoma (7:40.8).
The Clemson Invitational marked the fourth straight week in which Virginia’s Rowing team has faced Top 10 competition.
The Virginia First Varsity Four is composed of senior coxswain Julia Roithmayr (Yorktown, Va.); sophomore stroke Marijane Brennan (Grosse Point Farms, Mich.); senior three-seat Maggie Bowman-Jones (Moss Beach, Calif.); junior two-seat Hannah Solis-Cohen (New York, N.Y.) and sophomore Bow Ellen Pate (Lafayette, Calif.).
Virginia’s 1V4 crew was chosen over strong performances from North Carolina’s Novice Four, which posted times of 7:30.20 in defeating George Washington and 7:24.79 in downing George Mason Sunday on the Occoquan Reservoir; and Syracuse’ First Varsity Four, which defeated five ranked teams at the Clemson Invitational this past weekend. The Orange’s Varsity Four posted a time of 7:25.4 in defeating Penn, Louisville and Tennessee on Saturday, then came back with a 7:26.8 clocking in downing No 12 Indiana and No. 19 Gonzaga on Sunday.
The 2015 ACC Rowing Championships will be hosted by Clemson and will be held on Lake Hartwell on Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16 .
