UNC’s Major, Duke’s Chillano Earn ACC Honors

First cousins Gab Major and Alyssa Chillano named Players of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina’s Gab Major and Duke’s Alyssa Chillano have been named the ACC Field Hockey Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week.

Major equaled a Tar Heel single-game record with five goals in Friday’s win over No. 4 Virginia. The sophomore forward from Royersford, Pennsylvania, scored UNC’s second, third, fifth, seventh and eighth goals and also assisted on UNC’s first as the No. 3 Tar Heels beat the No. 4 Cavaliers 8-3 on a rainy afternoon in Charlottesville. The award is the second straight for Major, who now leads the Tar Heels with 11 goals this season after scoring nine in the last three games. She ranks second in assists with six.

Chillano helped the Duke defense post two shutouts on the weekend, a 2-0 victory over No. 9 Louisville Friday and a 7-0 win over Longwood Sunday. The Blue Devils collected their first shutout of the year against the Cardinals, holding their opponent scoreless on seven shots and eight penalty corners. On Sunday, the sophomore back from Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, recorded the first hat trick of her career, notching each of her three tallies on Duke penalty corner opportunities. Her performance helped the Blue Devils top the seven-goal mark for the first time since Sept. 30, 2012, when the program defeated Kent State by an 11-2 margin.
