Tree Lighting Ceremony in Uptown Charlotte Starts ACC Championship Game Celebration

Tree lighting on Thursday, Dec. 4 kicks off Championship Weekend festivities.

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Atlantic Coast Conference will join in Uptown Charlotte’s “Lights on the Square” festivities with the annual Uptown Tree Lighting ceremony, beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4.

The event, hosted by Charlotte Center City Partners, will be held at The Square, located at the intersection of Trade and Tryon Streets in Uptown Charlotte. The event will kick off at 5:30 pm with food, inflatables, cars on display and performances by the Hough High School Choir and the Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church handbell choir. At 6:00 pm, the Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte cast will perform selections from the “Great American Trailer Park Christmas,” and Santa will arrive shortly before the tree is lit at 6:30 pm. Family entertainment will then move inside Founder’s Hall, where the Charlotte Ballet will perform excerpts from The Nutcracker, the Leonard Bearstein Symphony Orchestra will perform and mascots will join Santa at his sleigh inside the Booth Playhouse lobby.

All 14 ACC mascots will ride in a trolley around the city leading up to their arrival at The Square. Fans are encouraged to attend and take photos with their favorite mascot. The ACC’s participation in the Tree Lighting Ceremony will be the first of many events leading up to Saturday’s Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game to be held at Bank of America Stadium.

“The tree lighting ceremony kicks off both the 2014 Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game weekend and the holiday season,” said Will Webb, executive director of Charlotte Sports Foundation, the local organizing committee. “The event brings the ACC mascots, music and other festivities to the Uptown Charlotte community.”
