Three ACC Volleyball Student-Athletes Named AVCA All-Americans

Thirteen additional ACC student-athletes garner honorable mention

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Florida State junior outside hitter Nicole Walch, Miami outside hitter Savanah Leaf and North Carolina opposite hitter Chaniel Nelson have earned second-team All-American honors as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

Walch becomes the third Seminole in history to capture second team accolades, joining Brianna Barry (2009) and Jekaterina Stepanova (2011). This is her second All-America nod after earning an honorable mention in 2013. The Stuart, Florida, native led the Seminoles in kills with 487, averaging 3.99 per set while hitting .267 percent. She also led in aces with 25 and in total points with 557.5, averaging 4.57 per set. Walch added 305 digs and 59 total blocks.

Leaf, the ACC Player of the Year, finished the season with 4.65 kills/set, ranking 12th in the country and atop the ACC. She led the team in kills (502), kills/set (4.65) and points (5.33), while ranking second in attack percentage (.312), service aces (27) and digs (266), and third in blocks (83). She also led the Canes with 13 double-doubles during the 2014 season. Leaf is the third Hurricane in program history to earn a spot on an AVCA All-American Team.

Nelson paced the North Carolina offense with 2.93 kills/set this season after missing all of 2013 with a leg injury.  Her return was a major component to the Tar Heels' historic season, where North Carolina went 29-3, won the ACC championship and advanced to the Regional Final of the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history. She becomes the second Tar Heel in program history to earn an AVCA All-American selection.

In addition to these three, thirteen other conference student-athletes received honorable mention. Schools placing student-athletes on the honorable mention list were Duke (3), Florida State (3), North Carolina (3), Louisville (2), Miami (1) and Pitt (1).
