This Week in ACC Soccer: Oct. 21


The ACC only has two more weeks of conference play in both Men’s and Women’s soccer, and the battle for conference bragging rights is still in the air. 

This week on the men’s side, the ACC has four teams ranked in the top 10 and six nationally ranked teams in the Top 25. Wake Forest comes in at No. 2 this week, followed by Clemson at No. 4, North Carolina at No. 6 and Notre Dame at No. 8. Syracuse is ranked 15th and the defending national champion Virginia Cavaliers also cracked the Top 25 at No. 21.

On the women’s side, Florida State still remains at the top of the national rankings, while Virginia is right behind them at No. 2. Clemson comes in at No. 6 this week, followed by Virginia Tech at No. 7, North Carolina at No. 9, Notre Dame at No. 15, and Duke at No. 22.

With the season coming to an end and the ACC Tournament around the corner, take a look at the upcoming week for all programs below.



Men’s

ATLANTIC DIVISION


Wake Forest
Record: 11-1-2 (4-0-2 ACC)

Last Week:
Won 1-0 vs North Carolina
Won 5-0 vs Georgia State

This Week:
Oct 23: vs Notre Dame
Oct 27: vs Davidson
Wake Forest stays on top with their win against North Carolina last week and have only given up six goals on the season. Watch out for Jack Harrison, who is third in the league with 16 points so far this season, while Sam Raben was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week last week. These are the final two home games for the Demon Deacons.

Clemson
Record: 12-1-2 (4-1-1 ACC)

Last Week:
Won 1-0 at Syracuse
Won 3-1 vs Georgia Southern

This Week:
Oct 23: vs Boston College
In their final home game, the Tigers matchup against a Boston College team that remains right behind the Tigers in the Atlantic Division. Clemson leads the league in goals forced this season with 32, which could be a big factor down the stretch.

Boston College
Record: 8-4-1 (3-3-0 ACC)

Last Week:
Lost 1-2 2OT at Louisville

This Week:
Oct 23: at Clemson
Oct 27: at Harvard
Boston College has two remaining road games this week, one being against Clemson. The Eagles have some dangerous weapons in Zeiko Lewis (five goals this season) and Trevor Davock (five assists this season) that could cause issues for the Tigers.

Syracuse
Record: 9-4-2 (2-3-1 ACC)

Last Week:
Lost 0-1 vs Clemson
Tie 2-2 vs Hartford

This Week:
Oct 23 vs NC State
Syracuse took their first loss on the season at home against Clemson last week. Their last home game will be against the Wolfpack before travelling to BC.  Ben Polk has been sensational so far this year, leading the league in points per game with 1.33.

NC State
Record: 8-3-3 (1-2-3 ACC)

Last Week:
Lost 2-6 at Duke
Won 2-1 vs Appalachian State

This Week:
Oct 23 at Syracuse
Last year when Syracuse and NC State met up, it ended in a 0-0 tie in 2 OT, while the year before, the Wolfpack lost 5-0.

Louisville
Record: 6-6-3 (1-2-3 ACC)

Last Week:
Won 2-1 2OT vs Boston College
Lost 1-2 at Indiana

This Week:
Oct 23: at North Carolina
Louisville got their first win against a ranked team last week and now will finish their season against two other ranked teams, beginning with UNC. Tate Schmitt will need to have big games, as he leads the team with six goals on the season.


COASTAL DIVISION


North Carolina
Record: 12-1-1 (5-1-0 ACC)

Last Week:
Lost 0-1 at Wake Forest
Won 6-1 at Campbell

This Week:
Oct 23: vs Louisville
Oct 27: vs Northeastern
In a battle of top programs in the conference, UNC came out on the wrong end against Wake Forest.  Now, the Heels have two home games, a place where they are undefeated on the season.

Notre Dame
Record: 8-2-5 (3-1-2 ACC)

Last Week:
Tie 0-0 at Virginia Tech
Tie 1-1 at Northwestern

This Week:
Oct 23 at Wake Forest
Notre Dame has tied in their last five games, and will be looking to end that streak against Wake Forest this week away from home. Jon Gallagher, who leads the league in goals this season with seven, will need to come up big for Irish.

Virginia
Record: 8-3-2 (3-2-1 ACC)

Last Week:
Won 3-1 vs Pittsburgh

This Week:
Oct 23: at Virginia Tech
The Cavaliers and the Hokies battle it out this week for state bragging rights.  Virginia  has either won or tied against the Hokies every year since the 2005-2006 season.

Duke
Record 7-6-2 (1-4-1 ACC)

Last Week:
Won 6-2 vs NC State
Won 2-1 vs Elon

This Week:
Oct 24: at Pittsburgh
Oct 27: vs Jacksonville
The Blue Devils got a big ACC win against NC State to get their first conference win. Now on a two game winning streak, the Blue Devils go on the road against Pittsburgh before finishing up the season in Durham. Zach Mathers is coming off Offensive Player of the Week with his hat trick last week against NC State.

Virginia Tech
Record: 5-6-3 (0-3-3 ACC)

Last Week:
Tie 0-0 vs Notre Dame
Lost 0-5 at Charlotte

This Week:
Oct 23: vs Virginia
Oct 27: vs Belmont
The Hokies hope to end their streak against their rivals in Virginia and players like Ricardo John (3.23 shots per game) and Merlin Baus (15 total points this season) could be the key to that this coming week.

Pittsburgh
Record: 5-7-3 (0-5-1 ACC)

Last Week:
Lost 3-1 at Virginia
Lost 3-2 vs Harvard

This Week:
Oct 24: Duke
The Panthers hold their last home game against the Blue Devils, a place there they are 4-4-1 on the season. Dan Lynd will have to be on top of his game in goal, as he has a .705 save percentage this season.

Florida State

This Week:
Oct 22: at Virginia Tech
Oct 25: at Virginia
Big week for the No. 1 ranked Seminoles, as they travel to the state of Virginia to take on two highly ranked teams in No. 7 Virginia Tech and then No. 2 Virginia. The conference's top spot could be on the line in those two games for Florida State.

Virginia
Record 11-1-1 (5-1-0 ACC)

Last Week:
Won 4-2 at Boston College

This Week:
Oct 22: vs Louisville
Oct 25: vs Florida State
Virginia’s Makenzy Doniak is coming off being named Offensive Player of the Week and is ranked 3rd in the ACC in total assists. The Hoos will certainly need her when they face Florida State on Oct 25.

Virginia Tech
Record 13-2-1 (5-2-0 ACC)

Last Week:
Won 3-0 vs Miami

This Week:
Oct 22: vs Florida State
Oct 25: vs Pittsburgh
The Hokies have their final two homes games this week at Thompson Field, a place where they are 6-1-1 on the season. Murielle Tiernan is tied for the most goals on the season with 12 for the Hokies, and both FSU and Pittsburgh will be keyed in on her this week.

Clemson
Record 11-2-1 (5-2-0 ACC)

Last Week:
Won 2-0 vs Pittsburgh

This Week:
Oct 22: at NC State
Oct 25: at North Carolina
The Tigers finished their home stretch with a 3-1-0 record and now hope to continue their ride with three away games, starting with two programs in the North Carolina this week before finishing up with Syracuse.

North Carolina
Record 11-3-1 (4-3-0 ACC)

Last Week:
Lost 0-1 vs Duke

This Week:
Oct 22: vs Notre Dame
Oct 25: vs Clemson
The Tar Heels have lost three straight down the stretch. Jessie Scarpa and company have an opportunity this week when they welcome in Notre Dame and Clemson, a pair of teams with double digit wins on the season.

Notre Dame
Record 11-3-1 (4-3-0 ACC)

Last Week:
Won 1-0 vs Wake Forest

This Week:
Oct 22: at North Carolina
Oct 25: at Duke
Two final roads game for the Notre Dame this week, but it won’t be easy against a UNC team that has Bryane Heaberlin in goal (giving up .50 goals per game) and Duke’s EJ Proctor (seven shutouts this season).  Anna Gilbertson is tied for second in the ACC with eight goals this season, while the Irish have their own dominating goalie in Kaela Little (five shutouts this season).

Pittsburgh
Record 10-4-1 (4-3-0 ACC)

Last Week:
Lost 0-2 at Clemson

This Week:
Oct 22: at Duke
Oct 25: at Virginia Tech
Part of their three game road trip, Pittsburgh will face two ranked teams in Duke and Virginia Tech.  The Panthers have an opportunity finish the season strong, possibly with three wins against ranked teams.

Boston College
Record 9-6-1 (3-3-1 ACC)

Last Week:
Lost 2-4 vs Virginia

This Week:
Oct 22: vs Wake Forest
Oct 25: vs Miami
The Eagles welcome in Wake Forest and Miami to Newton, Mass, two programs in the lower half of the ACC conference.  We will see if the Eagles can hit double digit wins for the first time since 2013.

Louisville
Record 7-6-2 (3-3-1 ACC)

Last Week:
Lost 1-3 vs Florida State

This Week:
Oct 22: at Virginia
Oct 25: at NC State
The Cardinals hit the road for their final three games of the season and it won’t be easy.  Louisville is 2-3-1 on the road this year but Taylor Bucklin has been excellent this year in goal with 58 saves, ranking her third in the conference.

Duke
Record 8-4-4 (2-2-3 ACC)

Last Week:
Won 1-0 at North Carolina

This Week:
Oct 22: vs Pittsburgh
Oct 25: vs Notre Dame
What a week for the Blue Devils, taking down their rivals down the road, while Imani Dorsey and Christina Gibbons were named Players of the Week. Duke looks to finish strong behind EJ Proctor and company, as they finish the season with three home games.

Miami
Record 5-9-0 (2-5-0 ACC)

Last Week:
Lost 0-3 at Virginia Tech

This Week:
Oct 22: at Syracuse
Oct 25: at Boston College
The Hurricanes hit the road and finish the season with three teams that have .500 or better records in conference play. Miami has their own fire power behind Gracie Lachowecki (eight goals on the season) and Natalie Moik (six assists on the season). 

Wake Forest
Record 4-10-2 (1-6-0 ACC)

Last Week:
Lost 0-1 at Notre Dame

This Week:
Oct 22: at Boston College
Oct 25: at Syracuse
The Demon Deacons lost their eighth one-goal game last week on the season. Wake Forest has played tough and looks to get over the hump this week on the road.

Syracuse
Record 4-10-1 (1-6-0 ACC)

Last Week:
Won 3-0 vs NC State

This Week:
Oct 22: vs Miami
Oct 25: vs Wake Forest
Congratulations to Syracuse for their first conference win last week against the Wolfpack. They now have three more home games to finish the season and with Courtney Brosnan leading the ACC in saves this year, they certainly could play spoilers to finish off the season.

NC State
Record 4-11-0 (0-6-0 ACC)

Last Week:
Lost 0-3 at Syracuse

This Week:
Oct 22: vs Clemson
Oct 25: vs Louisville
Two fantastic events coming up this week for the Wolfpack, as they take on Clemson in the Kay Yow Pink Match on Thursday and then have Senior Day on the 25th.  NC State would like nothing more than to send their seniors off in style and grab their first ACC win.
