Orange Defeat 13th-Ranked Michigan and Michigan State
GREENSBORO, N.C.—Syracuse’s Second Varsity Eight crew was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Crew of the Week Tuesday after defeating 13th-ranked Michigan and Michigan State in a four-way meet Saturday in Columbus, Ohio.
The Orange, ranked 17th nationally this week, posted a time of 6:44.03 despite a slight crosswind and light showers, in besting Michigan (6:45.5) and Michigan State (6:58.7), losing only to No. 1-ranked Ohio State (6:36.1) in a close race.
The Syracuse Second Varsity Eight is composed of sophomore coxswain Olivia Mennillo (Garrison, N.Y.); sophomore stroke Ailish Tinney (Sydney Australia); senior Seven-seat Holly Johnston (Tauranga, New Zealand); senior Six-seat Rose Aschebrock (Audeland, N.Z.); senior Five-seat Sienna DeSantis (Boston, Mass.); freshman Four-seat Christina Tobias (San Jose Calif.); sophomore Three-seat Alexandra Gill (Plymouth, Mass.); sophomore Two-seat Saydee McQuay (North Dartmouth, Mass.) and junior Bow Alex Zadravec (Fairfield, Conn.).
Syracuse’s Second Varsity Eight crew was chosen over a strong performance from Boston College’s Third Varsity Eight, which defeated Rhode Island and Boston University Saturday, posting a time of 7:55.7 despite a gusting quarterly headwind of 11 miles per hour. The BC Third Varsity Eight is undefeated this spring.
Syracuse will now be off until participating in the 2015 ACC Rowing Championships, which will be hosted by Clemson and will be held on Lake Hartwell on Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16 .
