GREENSBORO, N.C. – Syracuse’s Elaine Carey has been named the ACC Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week, while teammate Roos Wees was tabbed Defensive Players of the Week.
Carey netted a breakaway goal late in Syracuse’s 3-1 win over Boston College to seal the victory in Friday’s contest, the ACC opener for both teams. On Sunday, the graduate student from Galway, Ireland, scored the eventual game winner in the first half during another 3-1 win over No. 14 Stanford. Carey’s goal against the Eagles came after a long stretch pass allowed her to use her speed around a defender, while Sunday’s goal came off a key deflection in front of the net against the Cardinal.
Weers assisted on Elaine Carey’s goal in Friday’s 3-1 victory over Boston College and netted the third goal in Syracuse’s 3-1 win over Stanford. The sophomore back from Bussum, Netherlands, led the Orange defense that held the two ranked opponents to only 10 shots on net combined (five in each game) between the two contests.
