Nine IWLCA All-America honorees from a season ago headline the Preseason All-ACC Team
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Syracuse has been chosen to repeat as the Atlantic Coast Conference women’s lacrosse champion in a vote by the league’s eight head coaches.
The defending ACC champion Orange received five first-place votes en route to 61 total points, followed by North Carolina (one three-place vote, 59 points) and Notre Dame (45 points). One point separated the fourth- and fifth-place teams selected in the predicted order of finish, as Duke was picked fourth (31 points) and Boston College and Virginia each earned 30 points to tie for fifth. Louisville (24) was picked to finish seventh and Virginia Tech (8) eighth.
The Preseason All-ACC Team features seven returning IWLCA First Team All-Americans and nine total All-Americans from the 2015 season. Six of the eight ACC institutions were recognized on the Preseason All-ACC Team, led by North Carolina with four selections. Syracuse had three student-athletes named to the team, while Notre Dame had two student-athletes named to the team, and Boston College, Duke and Louisville each had one student-athlete tabbed.
Returning IWLCA First Team All-Americans named to the Preseason All-ACC Team include Syracuse senior attacker Kayla Treanor, who was also the 2015 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, and Notre Dame graduate student defender Barbara Sullivan the 2015 ACC Defensive Player of the Year. Boston College senior midfielder Sarah Mannelly, Louisville senior midfielder Kay Morissette, North Carolina junior goalie Caylee Waters, Notre Dame junior attacker Cortney Fortunato and Syracuse senior attacker Halle Majorana are also returning First-Team All-Americans. North Carolina junior midfielder Molly Bill and senior attacker Aly Messinger are IWLCA Second and Third Team honorees from a season ago.
Rounding out the Preseason All-ACC Team are North Carolina sophomore midfielder Marie McCool, Duke senior defender Claire Scarrone, and Syracuse redshirt senior defender Mallory Vehar.
Duke kicks off the 2016 season tonight against Campbell, while Louisville, North Carolina, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech open their seasons this weekend. The ACC Women’s Lacrosse Championship will be played April 28, 29 and May 1 on the campus of Virginia Tech.
