GREENSBORO, N.C.—Syracuse’s First Varsity Eight Rowing crew was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Crew of the Week Tuesday, after defeating 15th-ranked Harvard-Radcliffe and Dartmouth in the O’Leary Cup in Saratoga, New York.
Syracuse’s First Varsity Eight, coached by Justin Moore, recorded a time of 6:23.9 to defeat crews from Harvard-Radcliffe (6:28.9) and Dartmouth (6:41.7), to claim the O’Leary Cup.
The event, held on Fish Creek in Saratoga, New York, was the second of the spring season for the Orange First Varsity Eight, which is undefeated. Previously, the Orange won the championship of the Doc Hosea Invite. Syracuse retained the O’Leary Cup and defeated Harvard-Radcliffe for the first time in consecutive seasons. The win also marks just the third time overall that Syracuse has won the O’Leary Cup.
Syracuse’s First Varsity Eight is composed of Rebecca Spraggins (So., Arlington, Va.), Lauren Richards (So., North Arlington, Va.), Alexandra Gill (Sr., Plymouth, Mass.), Hattie Taylor (Sr., Sunningdale, England), Rachel Caldwell (So., Melbourne, Australia), Shannon McCann (Sr., Little Neck, N.Y.), Lucy Pearce (Fr., Melbourne, Australia), Saydee McQuay (Sr., North Dartmouth, Mass.) and Ashley Johnson (Jr., Buffalo, N.Y.).
The Orange, ranked 17th nationally, will next be in action in the Clemson Invitational this Saturday and Sunday on Lake Hartwell in Clemson. They will be competing against the Tigers, 10th-ranked Virginia, 18th-Louisville and 20th-ranked Duke, as well as a strong nonconference field that includes five nationally ranked teams, led by fourth-ranked Ohio State and fifth-ranked Texas.
Lake Hartwell is also the site of the 18th Annual Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Championship, which will be held on Sunday, May 14. Preliminaries for the ACC Championship begin in the morning at 8:05 a.m., followed by the finals in the late afternoon, beginning at 5:35 p.m.
