GREENSBORO, N.C. – Duke sophomore libero Ali McCurdy has been named the ACC Volleyball Player of the Week, announced by the conference on Monday. Outside hitter Jeme Obeime, also a Blue Devil, was named the ACC Volleyball Freshman of the Week, her second of the season.
The Blue Devils swept in-state rivals North Carolina and NC State over the weekend to improve to 14-6 overall and 8-3 in conference play and move into a tie for third place with Miami. The win over the Wolfpack moved Duke’s winning streak to six straight.
McCurdy, who was averaging a league-leading 5.5 digs per set going into the weekend, tallied 49 total digs at a 8.17 per set rate. The Tampa, Fla. native helped hold the Tar Heels, who had ranked second in the nation in kills per set, to a .226 hitting percentage.
Obeime hit a team-high .385 hitting percentage over the weekend in the two wins. Against the Tar Heels, she connected on seven kills with only one error, and improved on those numbers with 10 kills to one error against NC State.
In the win over North Carolina, just the second ACC loss for the Tar Heels this season, the Carmel, Ind. native picked up a career-high 11 digs. Against NC State, she added three blocks and five digs.
Duke returns to action Friday when it travels to take on the Clemson Tigers at 7:00 p.m.
