GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina sophomore opposite hitter Chaniel Nelson and Duke freshman outside hitter Emily Sklar have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball Player and Freshman of the Week, announced by the conference on Tuesday.
Nelson led the Tar Heels to a 3-0 performance at the Aggie Invitational in Davis, Calif. She tallied 36 kills, 16 digs, and 12 blocks, and posted a .301 hitting percentage over the weekend as North Carolina improved to 5-1 on the season. Against Santa Clara on Friday, the Huntersville, N.C., native notched a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs, and added eight blocks in a 3-2 win. Nelson collected 21 kills in six sets as the Tar Heels were perfect on Saturday, sweeping Utah and tournament host UC Davis. She was named tournament MVP for her performance.
Sklar paced the Blue Devil offense, helping Duke to a 2-1 mark at Louisville’s Cardinal Classic over the weekend. She totaled 42 kills, 20 digs and two blocks on the weekend, earning her second all-tournament team honors to start her career. The San Jose, Calif., native reached double-digit kills in all three matches, averaging 4.20 per set while hitting .337 for the weekend. Sklar began the tournament with a 10-kill performance against 2011 BIG EAST regular season champion Louisville, then turned in a standout performance against 2011 Southern Conference champion Samford Saturday. Versus the Bulldogs, she knocked down 19 kills and hit .472 to lead the Blue Devils. Sklar polished off the weekend with a double-double against Marshall, totaling 13 kills and 10 digs. This is her second straight conference weekly honor.
