GREENSBORO, N.C. - Florida State junior outside hitter Visnja Djurdjevic and NC State setter Alex Smith each earned tournament MVP honors and have been honored as this week's Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Players of the Week. Virginia outside hitter Emily Rottman was named Freshman of the Week.
Djurdjevic, a native of Zitiste, Serbia, posted a .359 hitting percentage and tallied 36 kills, helping the No. 15 Seminoles finish 3-0 at the Florida State Invitational. She led the team in kills and kills per set (3.6), while ranking second in digs (26).
A transfer from Tulane, Djurdjevic made her first collegiate appearance as a Seminole Friday as FSU topped New Mexico State 3-1. The junior registered 17 kills en route to a .455 attack percentage, along with three service aces, 12 digs and two block assists.
Florida State swept FIU and USF 3-0 on Saturday, finishing the tournament as the only undefeated team. Djurdjevic hit .375 against the Golden Panthers, posting eight kills and five digs. She followed that performance with a .241 clip against the Bulls, including 11 kills, nine digs and one block assist.
Smith, a senior from Placentia, Calif., hit .456 over three games as the Wolfpack went 3-0 at the Western Carolina Tournament. She tallied eight total blocks, including one block solo, along with 30 kills and 19 digs.
In NC State's 3-0 sweep of Eastern Kentucky, Smith hit .450 with 12 kills, three block assists and six digs. Against Coppin State, she recorded a .400 clip along with four kills, six digs and one block assist as NC State swept the match 3-0.
The Wolfpack topped Western Carolina 3-0 in the tournament finale on Saturday. Smith tallied a match-high 14 kills and hit .520. She also added four total blocks, including one block solo, and seven digs.
Rottman, an outside hitter from Santa Barbara, Calif., tallied 55 digs and 26 kills on the weekend, finishing with a .244 hitting percentage. She also registered three service aces and one block assist. Rottman ranked second on the team in both digs and kills, posting double-digit digs in all three matches. She did not commit a reception error despite being in serve receive through almost every rotation. The Cavaliers finished 3-0 at the Temple Invitational.
Making her first collegiate start in the Cavaliers' opener against Valparaiso, Rottman hit .286 with six kills and collected a match-high 26 digs. Virginia defeated the Crusaders 3-1.
In the Cavaliers' 3-1 win against Delaware, Rottman recorded a .269 attack percentage with eight kills, 18 digs and one block assist.
Virginia wrapped up the weekend with a 3-2 win against host Temple. Rottman notched her first collegiate double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs. She also hit .200 and added a service ace.
