ACC Announces First Weekly Volleyball Honors Of 2011

ACC Players of the Week Presented by Chevrolet

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech junior right side hitter Monique Mead has been named the first 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball Player of the Week after leading the Yellow Jackets to a win in the Georgia Tech Courtyard Marriott Classic. Duke freshman outside hitter Jeme Obeime picks up the first ACC Freshman of the Week honors for her performance in the Duke Invitational.

Monique MeadMead, a member of the All-ACC team for each of the last two years, compiled 63 kills in three matches over the weekend at a 5.25 kills-per-set rate. In her first two matches, she tallied 33 kills, five service aces, 24 digs, and five blocks in wins over Kansas State and Tennessee Tech.

She tied a career high with 30 kills on Sunday against Louisville, leading a comeback after the Yellow Jackets had fallen behind 2-0. It was just the 13th time in Georgia Tech history that a player has had at least 30 kills. Mead was named MVP of the tournament.

Obeime started her career off with a strong performance over the weekend in the Duke Invitational. The Carmel, Ind. native led the Blue Devils with 35 kills and five service aces, and added 14 digs and four blocks in the wins over Furman, Charleston Southern, and Wisconsin.

She closed out the match over Wisconsin with two consecutive points – one on her third kill of the set and the other with a service ace on match point – to clinch the come-from-behind victory.

The ACC Volleyball Player and Freshman of the Week will be announced by 5 p.m. each Monday throughout the season.
