Miami's Lane Carico Named ACC Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Feb. 22, 2012

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Miami senior outside hitter Lane Carico has been named the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and leads the sport’s 33-member All-ACC Academic Team.

An Exercise Physiology major, Carico is the first Miami volleyball player to be named Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the sixth Hurricane regardless of the sport to earn the award. This is the third time on the All-ACC Academic Team for the native of Manhattan Beach, Calif.

Carico was named to the AVCA All-America Team the past two years, having earned Second Team honors in 2011 after being named to the Third Team in 2010. She is just the second player in ACC volleyball history to earn two career All-America accolades higher than honorable mention. In 2008, Carico was named as the ACC Freshman of the Year and was named the ACC Player of the Year this past season.

Players from 11 different ACC schools are represented on this year’s All-ACC Academic Team, led by Duke’s five players. Wake Forest, NC State, Miami, and Georgia Tech all have four players apiece.

Duke’s Sophia Dunworth was named to the All-ACC Academic Team for the fourth time in her career. Clemson’s Natalie Patzin, Duke’s Christiana Gray and Amanda Robertson, Virginia Tech’s Cara Baarendse, and Wake Forest’s Andrea Beck all join Carico as three-time honorees.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
