GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina senior Sanaz Marand has been named the final 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week after posting two key singles victories to lead the top-ranked Tar Heels to their first regular-season league title since 1987.
Marand scored wins over two top-25 opponents at the top of the singles lineup, including Saturday's pivotal victory over Miami's Laura Vallverdu, the nation's sixth-ranked player and the 2009 NCAA singles runner-up. Marand rallied from a set down to defeat Vallverdu, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, in UNC's 4-3 win over the No. 11 Hurricanes that clinched the regular-season title and the top seed for this week's ACC Championship.
Marand then downed No. 23 Lauren McCreless of Florida State on Sunday, 6-3, 6-1, in the Tar Heels' 4-0 sweep of the Seminoles. The Katy, Texas, native also teamed with classmate Katrina Tsang at No. 1 doubles to defeat McCreless and Francesca Segarelli of FSU, 8-1.
North Carolina (24-3, 11-0) will join the conference's other 11 teams at the ACC Championships, which get under way Thursday at the Cary (N.C.) Tennis Park.
