GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia freshman Julia Elbaba has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, announced Tuesday by the league office.
The weekly honor is her second of the season as she was named ACC Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Jan. 22.
Elbaba went undefeated in singles (3-0) and doubles (2-0) while helping the No. 27 Cavaliers to a 2-1 week, including a 4-3 win at No. 1 North Carolina. The win over the Tar Heels marked Virginia's first win over the nation's No. 1 team in program history.
Elbaba, who is ranked No. 15 in latest ITA National rankings, defeated a pair of ranked foes at No. 2 singles. The Oyster Bay, N.Y., native topped Duke's No. 52 Ester Goldfeld, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, in Virginia's 4-3 loss at No. 7 Duke on March 29. A day later, Elbaba defeated North Carolina's No. 43 Zoe De Bruycker, 6-3, 6-1, and added a win over North Carolina Central's Olesya Palko, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 1 position. Elbaba owns a 26-8 overall singles record, and is undefeated (5-0) in ACC dual action.
Elbaba and Hana Tomljanovic teamed at the No. 2 position and earned doubles point clinching wins in both matches against Duke and North Carolina. The duo defeated Duke's Hanna Mar and Mary Clayton, 8-5, and North Carolina's Tessa Lyons and Gina Suarez-Malaguti, 8-6.
