GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland junior Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week presented by Chevrolet after leading the Terps to a pair of wins, including their first victory over a top-15 ranked opponent in nearly six years.
After clinching last Thursday's 6-1 win over Georgetown with a straight sets victory at No. 1 singles, Sanchez-Quintanar was instrumental in helping Maryland defeat 11th-ranked Virginia, 4-3, on Sunday. The junior from Campo de Criptana, Spain, ranked No. 121 nationally, upended Emily Fraser, the 55th-ranked player in the nation, with a straight sets win (6-2, 6-2). Sanchez-Quintanar's singles win gave the Terps a 2-0 lead in the match after she teamed with Jordaan Sanford to clinch the doubles point from the No. 1 position against Virginia's 20th-ranked duo of Fraser and Hana Tomljanovic.
Sanchez-Quintanar remained perfect in the dual season. She is 12-0 in singles this spring and 13-0 in doubles, a key component to the Terps' 11-2 start to the year. Prior to the win over Virginia, Maryland's last win over a top 15 team occurred on April 10, 2005 when it knocked off 12th-ranked Duke, 4-3.
