GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia freshman Stephanie Nauta has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, announced Tuesday by the league office.
Nauta went 8-1 as Virginia won the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic title last week, including wins over Michigan State (4-0), No. 34 Yale (4-3) and No. 50 Tulane (4-1). The two wins over ranked competition are the third and fourth of the season for the Cavaliers.
The freshman from Galveston, Texas, was named the tournament MVP after dropping just one singles match during the tournament.
In singles play, Nauta collected two wins at the No. 1 slot over Tulane’s No. 92 Klara Vyskocilova (6-4, 6-1) and Yale’s Madeline Hamilton (6-1, 6-1). Nauta was leading Michigan State’s Marina Bohrer, 6-1, 3-2, before the match was decided. The No. 71 ranked singles player also picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Baylor’s Victoria Kisialeva at No. 2.
In doubles action, Nauta paired with Erin Vierra to go 3-0 at No. 1 and 2-0 at No. 2. The duo surrendered just four total games to their counterparts from Baylor, Yale and Michigan State at No. 1 doubles, and earned an 8-2 and 8-4 win over tandems from Texas A&M and Baylor at No. 2, respectively.
