GREENSBORO, N.C. – Miami freshman Lina Lilekite and Duke sophomore Hanna Mar have been named the ACC Women’s Tennis Players of the Week.
Lilekite keyed a pair of wins, including an ACC victory over Clemson, by sweeping each of her singles and doubles matches. Mar defeated No. 73 Kristy Frilling and teamed up for a doubles win to lead the third-ranked to a 5-2 team victory over 17th-ranked Notre Dame.
Miami’s Lileikite cracked the ITA singles rankings at No. 118 earlier last week, and the Liepaja, Latvia native lived up to that billing by powering on to a perfect 2-0 record in both singles and doubles action. Along with doubles partner Gabriela Mejia, Lileikite took down UNF’s tandem of Weymar and Pereira 8-5, then Clemson’s duo of Koelzer and Gumulya a day later at 8-3. Miami won the doubles point in both matches. In singles action, the freshman made quick work of the Osprey’s Danielle Day on Saturday in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Then on Sunday against Clemson, Lileikite took down No. 103 ranked Nelly Ciolkowski, again winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Duke’s Mar, ranked 45th in the nation in singles, defeated Frilling, 6-4, 6-2, in No. 2 singles, as Duke cruised past Dame in South Bend, Ind., Saturday afternoon. Her victory clinched the match for the Blue Devils, who despite losing the doubles point for just the second time this season, rebounded to sweep all six singles matches. The Burr Ridge, Ill., native ranks second on the team with 19 singles wins and owns a 6-2 mark in dual singles matches. The sophomore also collected Duke’s only doubles win in the match, as she teamed up with freshman Annie Mulholland to score an 8-6 victory in the No. 3 spot over the Irish’s Jennifer Kellner and Chrissie McGaffigan. Mar and Mulholland improved their doubles mark to 10-3 overall and 5-1 in dual matches, while the 10 victories are also tied for the team lead.
