ACC Tennis Featured Prominently in Campbell's/ITA Spring Preseason Rankings

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Defending national champion Duke holds the No. 1 spot in the first Campbell’s/ITA women’s college tennis rankings of the 2010 spring season, while three-time defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion Virginia holds the No. 2 men’s ranking.

In addition, Georgia Tech’s Irina Falconi is the No. 1-ranked women’s singles player in the poll, released Tuesday evening by the ITA office in Skillman, N.J.

The Blue Devil women, who lost 2009 NCAA singles champion Mallory Cecil to the professional ranks but return four players currently ranked in the top 100 among singles players, lead a group of six ACC women’s teams among the Top 25. Miami checks in at No. 7, followed by Georgia Tech at No. 10, Clemson at No. 14, Florida State at No. 15 and North Carolina at No. 18. Virginia is ranked No. 26.

Virginia leads a group of five ACC men’s teams ranked among the preseason Top 25. Florida State holds a No. 13 ranking, followed by Wake Forest at No. 16, Duke at No. 19 and Miami at No. 21. Virginia Tech holds the No. 27 spot, followed by North Carolina at No. 28.

Duke, Florida State and Miami are among a group of 12 schools with both their men’s and women’s teams ranked among the Top 25.

Georgia Tech’s Falconi is joined in the women’s singles preseason top 10 by Miami’s Laura Vallverdu (No. 7) and Clemson’s Josipa Bek (No. 9).

On the men’s side, Virginia’s Michael Shabaz will begin the spring season ranked No. 3 in singles play, while Georgia Tech’s Guillermo Gomez holds a No. 4 ranking.

The ACC boasts two of the top five women’s preseason doubles teams in Miami’s Gabriela Mejia-Vallverdu and Clemson’s Bek-Ina Hadziselimovic. The Virginia men’s doubles team of Houston Barrick-Sanam Singh is ranked fifth.

Spring season play for most ACC schools begins the weekend of Jan. 15-18, and all 12 men’s and women’s teams are set to be in action by the end of the month. The second annual ITA Men's and Women's Kick-Off Weekend will take place January 29 - February 1, 2010 at select campus host sites.
