June 16, 2011

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Georgia Tech senior Christy Jones has been honored as the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, announced today by Commissioner John Swofford. Jones highlights the 2011 All-ACC Academic Softball Team, which includes 12 All-ACC honorees.

To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his or her academic career.

A four-time All-ACC Academic Team selection, Jones led the league in stolen bases, tallying 33 on the season in 38 attempts. The centerfielder from Wichita, Kan., ranked 21st nationally in the category and was named to the All-ACC Second Team, marking her second consecutive all-conference selection. Jones finished her career third in school history in stolen bases with 95. In leading the Yellow Jackets to their third straight ACC regular season title and 10th consecutive NCAA Softball Championship appearance, she hit .342 for the season, which ranked third among her teammates and ninth in the league. Jones had 54 hits on the season with 32 runs. She finished the 2011 campaign with a 1.000 fielding percentage and 46 putouts. A mechanical engineering major, Jones was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Softball Second Team in May.

Joining Jones as both an All-ACC and All-ACC Academic honoree were teammates Kristine Priebe, Alysha Rudnik and Jessica Sinclair, Tori Speer of Boston College, Shayla Jackson and Jen Lapicki of Florida State, Kerry Hickey of Maryland, Kelli Wheeler of North Carolina, Stephanie Harris of Virginia, and Dani Anderson and Courtney Liddle of Virginia Tech. Hickey, Anderson and Liddle joined NC State's Bridget Desbois and Virginia Tech's Betty Rose in being recognized on the 2011 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I All-Region Teams.

Three student-athletes collected All-ACC Academic Team selection for the third time in their career, including Hickey, North Carolina's Brittany McKinney and Virginia's Alison Pittman. An additional 13 student-athletes garnered the second honor of their career.
