GREENSBORO, N.C. - Georgia Tech freshman Ashley Thomas has been recognized as the Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Player of the Week, while Maryland senior Kerry Hickey has been tabbed Pitcher of the Week for the period of April 25-May 1. Thomas registered three multi-hit games as the Yellow Jackets swept Boston College. Hickey finished the week 3-0 with two saves as the Terrapins went 5-0.
A second baseman from McKinney, Texas, Thomas hit .545 over three games, tallying six hits, four runs and three RBI. She also added two stolen bases. In the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at conference foe Boston College, Thomas hit 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, driving in three runs. She also scored twice as Georgia Tech won 11-2 in five innings, clinching the ACC regular season championship. Against the Eagles on Sunday, Thomas went 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring twice. The Yellow Jackets prevailed 9-7 to complete the three-game sweep. Thomas has now hit safely in nine consecutive games.
Hickey pitched two complete game shutouts and earned two saves, finishing the week with a 3-0 mark. The right-hander from Huntingtown, Md., pitched 21.1 innings, surrendering just one earned run and striking out 31 batters. She opened the week Wednesday against Delaware State giving up just two hits and fanning 12 to earn her first complete game shutout of the week as the Terrapins won 13-0 in five innings. Her second double-digit strikeout effort of the week came Saturday at Virginia Tech as she fanned 11 batters and allowed one unearned run in Maryland's 3-2 victory. Hickey wrapped up the series Sunday with her second complete game shutout of the week. She surrendered two hits and struck out five en route to a 2-0 victory. Hickey finished the week with a 0.33 ERA, helping the Terrapins set a program best in ACC wins on the season.
ACC softball action continues Wednesday with two teams in action. Both Georgia Tech and Maryland return to the field this weekend to close out the regular season with three-game series against conference opponents. The Yellow Jackets host Florida State, while Maryland welcomes North Carolina.
The ACC Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week will be announced by 5 p.m. each Tuesday during the regular season.
