GREENSBORO, N.C.--Georgia Tech sophomore third baseman Danielle Dike was named Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Player of the Week and Maryland sophomore pitcher Kendra Knight was selected Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season, announced today. Dike helped the nationally-ranked Yellow Jackets to a series win over Florida State, clinching the regular-season championship for Georgia Tech, while Knight went 2-0 in two starts against league-foe NC State.
In a schedule loaded with four games against a nationally-ranked opponent, Dike batted .500 (6-for-12) with three homeruns, five runs batted-in, four runs scored, and a 1.250 slugging percentage, as Duke went 2-2 last week. In Saturday’s first game against No. 24 Florida State (USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association), a 14-1 win, the Scottsville, Va., native had three hits in three tries, including a pair of home runs, her second career multi-home run game. Her bases-loaded, two-outs, two-run single in Sunday’s rubber game against the Seminoles led Georgia Tech to a 5-2 victory, a win that, despite Virginia’ series sweep of Boston College, clinched the ACC regular season championship for the Jackets.
Knight, who also garnered Pitcher of the Week honors on March 9 and March 23, logged 14.0 innings of work in two wins over NC State without giving up a run. The Virginia Beach, Va., native allowed just two hits and struck out seven Wolfpack in the Terrapins 2-0 win over NC State on Saturday. She followed that performance up with a 1-0 gem, in which she fanned six batters and allowed just one hit. Knight has not given up a run of any kind in her last 15.1 innings
The ACC Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week will be announced by 5 p.m. each Tuesday during the regular season.
