ACC Names Softball Co-Players and Pitcher of the Week

April 20, 2010

GREENSBORO, N.C.--Georgia Tech senior second baseman Jen Yee and Virginia Tech senior shortstop Misty Hall were selected Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Players of the Week and Virginia freshman pitcher Melanie Mitchell was named Pitcher of the Week for the period ending April 18, announced today. Last week, Yee set school records for career walks and runs in a season and tied the ACC home run record for a season, Hall hit a pair of home runs in the seventh inning in wins over Florida State, and Mitchell went 3-0 on the mound.

Yee, who is collecting her second consecutive nod for player of the week and fifth of the season, was kept off base just three times in 22 plate appearances, going 11-for-15 at the plate (.733) with six walks and a hit-by-pitch. In non-conference play against Georgia Southern and Kennesaw State, the New Delta, British Columbia, native scored eight runs in 12 trips to the plate, tallied five hits, including a double and home run, as well as a pair of runs batted-in.

Yee was a perfect 6-for-6 in a three-game weekend series sweep of Boston College and broke Tara Knuden's school record for career walks and passed current assistant coach Aileen Morales' single-season runs mark during Saturday's doubleheader, needing 24 less games to pass Morales. Yee's 24th homerun of the season came in Sunday's 4-0 win over the Eagles, tying her with former Yellow Jacket Whitney Haller for the ACC record. She has been walked 121 times in her career and has scored 76 times this season.

In addition, Yee is threatening to become just the second player in league history and first since Haller in 2006 to win the triple crown, leading the conference with a .597 clip, 24 homers, and 53 RBI, in addition to six other offensive categories.

Hall, who is the first Hokie to garner a weekly accolade this season, batted .545 for the week (6-for-11), including a 5-for-8 performance in a three-game series against No. 16 Florida State ( Softball). She connected for two long balls in Saturday's first game, including a game-tying, two-out homer in the seventh inning. The Hokies went on to win the game, 8-7. Virginia Tech won the second game thanks to Hall's walk-off solo shot, sending the Hokies to a 5-4 victory. Earlier in the week, the Dayton, Va., native hit a big fly in Wednesday's 9-3 win over Radford.

Mitchell, who also earned pitcher of the week honors on March 16, went 3-0 in three starts, taking a 5-0 win against Hampton and 4-1 and 1-0 victories in back-to-back days over conference-foe NC State. In 24.0 innings pitched, including all 10 of Saturday's marathon with the Wolfpack, Mitchell gave up only one unearned run on 11 hits and struck out 29 batters. Her two wins over NC State tied the school record for ACC wins in a season with nine, while her 21 wins in 2010 are the most for a Cavalier since 2002. The White Plains, Md., native has hurled a league-leading 211.1 innings and is third with 223 punch outs.

The ACC Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week will be announced by 5 p.m. each Tuesday during the regular season. All ACC softball information can be found at
