GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State senior centerfielder Caitlin Dent and sophomore pitcher Emily Weiman have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, as announced Tuesday by the conference.
Dent, who had seven career home runs combined in her previous two years as a starter, hit six over the fence on the week to lead NC State to a 4-1 record and a series win over No. 24 North Carolina. She capped off the best week of her career by hitting a three-run, walk-off home run to beat the Tar Heels, 11-8, on the Wolfpack senior day. It was her second home run of the game and her third game with two home runs of the week.
A native of Boynton Beach, Fla., Dent went 7-for-17 with seven extra-base hits for a .412 batting average in the five games. She scored seven runs and tallied 14 RBIs and walked twice. On the season, she leads the Wolfpack with 37 RBIs and is second in home runs (10), batting average (.298), and slugging percentage (.612).
Weiman picked up four wins, including two over No. 24 North Carolina, as she threw five complete games for NC State last week. She had a complete game shutout against Campbell and only gave up one earned run in her only loss of the week in the series opener against the Tar Heels.
A sophomore from Pasadena, Md., Weiman held North Carolina to three hits and only one earned run in two different games. She has been the winning pitcher in all five of the Wolfpack’s wins over ranked teams this season. Weiman’s victory on Saturday was her 20th of the season, as she became only the sixth pitcher in program history to reach that mark. In her career, she has won 35 games, which ranks fourth in school history.
