ACC Named Softball Pitcher and Player of the Week

April 13, 2010

GREENSBORO, N.C.—Georgia Tech senior second baseman Jen Yee was selected Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Player of the Week and Maryland junior pitcher Kerry Hickey was named Pitcher of the Week for the period ending April 11, announced today. Yee’s honor comes as her fourth of the season after collecting the first three weekly accolades. Hickey threw a seven-inning no-hitter to beat conference-foe Virginia Tech.

Despite having only seven official at-bats, Yee collected five hits last week, including two doubles and two home runs, walked eight times, drove in two runs, and scored eight more of her own, two in each of four games. In a critical three-game series against visiting Virginia, against whom the nationally-ranked Yellow Jackets owned a one-half game lead in the standings entering the match-up, Yee went 4-for-6 at the plate and hit solo home runs in each of the first two games, 5-2 and 5-3 wins on Saturday. A native of New Delta, British Columbia, Yee walked three times in the series finale, an 8-0 Georgia Tech victory, securing its lead in the ACC standings and sending the Cavaliers to third place. With 21 home runs in 2010, Yee is three shy of tying the ACC single-season record, set by former Yellow Jacket Whitney Haller in 2006, and was recently named to the USA Baseball National Player of the Year Top-25 “Watch List.”

Hickey threw her ninth career no-hitter—and the 14th in the ACC this season—and struck out nine batters in defeating Virginia Tech, 7-0, in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. The Huntingtown, Md., native also earned the victory in the back end of the twinbill, going the distance again, and allowing just three runs (one earned) on five hits, while striking out seven. Earlier in the week, Hickey pitched all 5.0 innings of an 8-0 win over George Washington, allowing only one hit and fanning nine. She finished the week with a 3-0 mark, improving her season record to 15-7, and 25 strikeouts over 19.0 innings pitched.

The ACC Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week will be announced by 5 p.m. each Tuesday during the regular season. All ACC softball information can be found at
