Virginia's Skinkis and Florida State's Gober Tabbed With ACC Softball Weekly Honors

March 30, 2010

GREENSBORO, N.C.—Florida State senior hurler Terese Gober threw her second career no-hitter against Boston College and Virginia freshman Alex Skinkis batted at a .467 clip to help the Cavaliers to a 4-1 week en route to be named Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, for the period ending March 28, announced today. Gober’s no-hitter is the 11th in the league this season, while Skinkis is the first non-senior to garner player of the week accolades this season.

Gober struck out a career-high 14 Eagles while issuing only two base on balls in her no-hitter, a 6-0 shutout of Boston College (Mar. 27) in the second game of a doubleheader. The following day, the McDonough, Ga., native started and worked the first 4.0 innings of an 11-3 (five innings) win over the Eagles, capping the sweep, in which she struck out six and gave up just two hits. Earlier in the week, Gober pitched the first 2.0 innings of a 4-3 win over No. 7/10 Georgia, allowing just one earned run on three hits. This season, Gober ranks among the ACC’s top-10 in several categories, including third by allowing opposing batters to hit a paltry .150.

Skinkis guided the Cavaliers to a 4-1 week, including an ACC series sweep of Virginia Tech, the first time Virginia swept the Hokies since 1998. The LaPalma, Calif., native, collected seven hits in 15 at-bats (.467), including a 2-for-3 game with one double and two runs scored in a 4-0 win over in-state foe Liberty (Mar. 24) in the first game of a doubleheader. Skinkis was 4-for-9 with two runs batted-in and three scored in the three-game set with Virginia Tech, guiding the Cavaliers to a 5-0 conference record and first-place holding in the league standings.

League play resumes this weekend with four series. NC State will host Boston College, Georgia Tech will host Virginia Tech, Maryland will host Florida State, and Virginia will host North Carolina in three-game series beginning on Friday, April 2.

The ACC Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week will be announced by 5 p.m. each Tuesday during the regular season. All ACC softball information can be found at
