GREENSBORO, N.C. - Boston College freshman Tory Speer has been recognized as the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week presented by Chevrolet, while Florida State senior Sarah Hamilton and Maryland senior Kerry Hickey shared co-Pitcher of the Week honors presented by Chevrolet for their outstanding performances last week. Speer drove in six runs as the Eagles clinched their first-ever series sweep over an ACC opponent. Hamilton posted a 1.00 ERA for the week as the Seminoles opened conference play with two victories, while Hickey pitched two complete game shutouts as the Terrapins went 7-0 last week.
Speer hit .545 for the week, collecting six hits, four runs and six RBI. She also tallied four extra-base hits, including two home runs as Boston College topped Virginia to complete its first-ever series sweep in ACC competition. In her league debut Saturday, the Trabuco Canyon, Calif., outfielder went 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in a run and scoring twice as the Eagles prevailed 9-3. In the second game of the doubleheader, Speer went 2-3 with two round-trippers, driving in five runs. BC claimed an 11-3 triumph. She finished the weekend with a 1.273 slugging percentage.
A right-handed pitcher from Tallahassee, Fla., Hamilton went 3-0 on the week, pitching three complete games. She opened the week against South Alabama, recording her second one-hitter of the season. Hamilton struck out 12, her second-highest total of the season, earning a 6-0 shutout. In the conference opener at NC State, she allowed just two earned runs and struck out nine as the Seminoles won 3-2. The next day in the rubber match, she surrendered one earned run as Florida State won the game 7-2 and claimed the series.
Hickey finished the week with a 3-0 mark, helping Maryland extend its winning streak to 11 games. She gave up just one run in 21 innings of work and fanned 27 batters. The Huntingtown, Md., right-hander opened the week versus Fordham, striking out 10 and surrendering just one earned run en route to a 7-1 victory. Against Utah in the Maryland Round Robin Hickey fanned 10 batters for the second consecutive time on her way to a 6-0 win. Hickey finished the week with a 1-0 victory over Villanova, allowing just three hits and striking out seven. Opposing batters hit .169 against her on the week.
ACC softball action continues Tuesday with a doubleheader. Boston College resumes conference play this weekend, taking on Virginia Tech Saturday and Sunday in Blacksburg. Florida State travels to North Carolina, and Maryland opens league play by visiting Virginia. Georgia Tech will host NC State.
