GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech junior Shannon Bear and her teammate, senior Kristen Adkins, have been recognized as the Atlantic Coast Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week presented by Chevrolet for their outstanding performances last week. Bear tallied five extra-base hits, while Adkins surrendered just two earned runs in 19 innings of work. The Yellow Jackets finished 5-0 on the week, including a 3-0 mark at the Buzz Classic.
Bear hit .429 for the week, collecting six hits, three runs and nine RBI. She also recorded four doubles, one home run and a stolen base. The left fielder/second baseman from Grayson, Ga., finished the week with at least one RBI in each of her five games. Friday against Jacksonville State in the Buzz Classic, Bear blasted a solo home run as the Yellow Jackets won 4-3. Later that day against Evansville, she went 3-for-4 at the plate. All three of her hits went for extra bases as she drove in four runs and scored twice. Georgia Tech earned an 18-1 victory.
A right-handed pitcher from McKinney, Texas, Adkins picked up three wins on the week, pitching two complete games. She started the week at Georgia State, giving up just two hits and one walk en route to a 3-0 victory. Adkins struck out 10 of the 23 batters she faced. Sunday against UAB in the Buzz Classic, Adkins allowed three hits and walked two. She fanned four batters as the Yellow Jackets won 8-0 to register their second shutout of the week. Adkins finished the week with a 0.74 ERA.
ACC softball action continues Tuesday with five games on the schedule. Georgia Tech will face Penn State in Kennesaw, Ga., before returning home to take on Alabama Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets host the Springhill Suites Buckhead Classic this weekend in Atlanta, and the remaining seven league teams will also participate in tournament action.
