North Carolina's Spaulding and Georgia Tech's Yee Named ACC Pitcher and Player of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. — North Carolina senior pitcher/first baseman Danielle Spaulding and Georgia Tech senior second baseman Jen Yee were named Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Pitcher and Player of the Week for the period ending February 21, announced today. Spaulding sandwiched a one-hit performance with a pair of no-hitters at the Carolina Classic (Feb. 19-21), while Yee—earning her second consecutive player of the week accolade—extended her hitting streak to nine games at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic (Feb. 19-21).

Spaulding helped the Tar Heels open the Carolina Classic last Friday with an 11-0 win (six innings) over Delaware by striking out 16 of the 18 batters en route to her first no-no of the tournament. On Saturday, the Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native started and earned the win, working the first four innings in North Carolina’s 8-0 win against UNC - Greensboro (six innings). Spaulding fanned 11 of the 13 batters she faced, while giving up just one hit. Her third start of the weekend came on Sunday against St. Joseph’s, as Spaulding authored her second no-hitter in three games by striking out 11 more batters, while giving up just one walk, and the Tar Heels cruised to another 8-0 victory in six innings. This season, Spaulding is 3-1 with a 1.06 earned-run average and has given up just five earned runs on 15 hits in 33.0 innings pitched, while striking out 52 batters and issuing just 13 walks.

Jen YeeYee picked up her second Player of the Week honor after leading the ninth-ranked Yellow Jackets (ESPN.com/USA Softball) to a 4-1 record over the weekend, including a 9-6 win over No. 21 Northwestern. Yee picked up two more multi-hit games in going 2-for-2 at the plate with one home run, two runs batted-in, and two runs scored in a 10-9 triumph over Brigham Young, and was 3-for-3 with a home run, double, one RBI, and four runs in Georgia Tech’s 11-2 win against Long Beach State. The New Delta, British Columbia, native was 8-for-15 with two round-trippers, five RBI, and seven runs scored over the week, is currently riding a nine-game hitting streak, and is tearing at a .625 clip.
