GREENSBORO, N.C. - Georgia Tech freshman Alysha Rudnik and her teammate, senior Kristen Adkins, have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week Presented by Chevrolet for their outstanding performances last week. The duo helped the Yellow Jackets to a 5-0 record and the National Collegiate Invitational title. Rudnik hit safely in every game this weekend, while Adkins did not allow an earned run in 15 innings of work.
A third baseman/catcher from Lawrenceville, Ga., Rudnik went 10-for-17 at the plate for a .588 average. Facing FAU in her collegiate debut Friday, she went 3-for-3 with two doubles and the game-tying home run. The Yellow Jackets prevailed 3-2. Saturday against Fordham, Rudnik hit a three-run triple with two outs on the board to break open a 1-0 game in the sixth inning. Tech went on to win 6-0. Rudnik finished the weekend with three doubles, a triple, a home run and five RBI. She registered at least one hit in all five of her games.
Adkins appeared in four games over the weekend, picking up two wins and a save. She faced 22 batters in her season debut against Chattanooga Friday, allowing just two hits while striking out eight to earn her first win, 6-1. The McKinney, Texas, native pitched two innings in Saturday's game against Chattanooga. Adkins fanned three of the eight batters she faced to clinch the save as the Yellow Jackets won 6-1. In the 3-1 victory over Fordham Sunday, Adkins struck out nine in just five innings of work, setting a career high. She finished the weekend with 22 strikeouts.
All eight league teams are in action this weekend. Seven teams compete in tournaments, including Georgia Tech, which travels to Miami, Fla., for FIU's Felsberg Memorial Tournament.
