GREENSBORO, N.C. - Georgia Tech has been chosen as the favorite to win the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference softball regular season, as voted on by the league's eight head coaches. The Yellow Jackets, who have won three straight regular season titles, received 46 points in the vote. Coaches were not allowed to include their own team on their ballot.
North Carolina, which came in second place in the conference in 2011, had two first place votes and 43 points. Florida State, which won the conference tournament title last year, picked up the remaining first place vote and finished four points behind the Tar Heels with 39 points.
Rounding out the preseason predictions were Virginia with 26 points, Maryland with 25 points, Virginia Tech with 21 points, NC State with 16 points, and Boston College with eight points.
Georgia Tech, Florida State, and Maryland all represented the conference in the 2011 NCAA Softball Championship.
The 2012 season kicks off Friday, Feb. 10, with six conference teams in action.
