GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina senior Courtney Jones has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week after leading the Tar Heels to a pair of league road wins, including a victory at ninth-ranked Florida State.
Jones scored goals against both Florida State and Miami and added an assist on the first goal against the Hurricanes. UNC beat FSU 2-0 and Miami 4-1 less than a week after losing a 1-0 home match to Virginia, its first ever loss to the Cavaliers.
Jones had two identical cross cage finishes on her goals, ripping low line drives into the left side netting in both games for her second and third goals of the season. The Danville, Calif., midfielder’s corner kick also set up Megan Brigman’s goal that gave UNC the lead against Miami for good.
The last trip to play the Florida schools in 2009 resulted in an 0-2 record for UNC. This year’s win over Florida State snapped the Seminoles’ 14-game home unbeaten streak (13-0-1), which dated back to last season. The Tar Heels also scored at Miami for the first time since the 2005 season.
Jones leads UNC in assists with six and points with 12.
