ACC Leads All Conferences With Eight Teams Among Women's Soccer Preseason Top 25

Aug. 18, 2010

A national-best eight Atlantic Coast Conference teams are ranked among the Soccer America Women’s Preseason Top 25 announced on Wednesday morning

Stanford and defending NCAA and ACC champion North Carolina are ranked 1-2 in Top 25 rankings, as selected by Soccer America’s editors.

Boston College holds a No. 6 ranking and is joined in the preseason Top 10 by fellow ACC teams Virginia (No. 7) and Florida State (No. 9). Maryland checks in at No. 12, while Wake Forest is ranked 15th, Virginia Tech 17th and Duke 24th.

Each of the ACC’s preseason ranked teams earned NCAA Tournament berths last season, when a conference-record eight teams took part in postseason play. Seven ACC teams were among the final 16 of the 2009 NCAAs, and four (North Carolina, Boston College, Florida State and Wake Forest) were among the eight quarterfinalists.

North Carolina beat Stanford, 1-0, to snap the Cardinal's 25-game winning streak in the 2009 Women’s College Cup final, but the Cardinal will get a rematch when it travels to Chapel Hill to face the Tar Heels on Aug. 27 at the Carolina Nike Classic.

Portland is No. 3 in the Soccer America Preseason Top 25, while Notre Dame and UCLA, which joined UNC and Stanford at the 2009 College Cup, round out the top five.
