HEIDELBERG, Germany - Former North Carolina star Heather O'Reilly scored the first goal of the United States Women's National Team's 3-0 win over Colombia in Saturday's FIFA Women's World Cup Germany 2011 Group C match before a capacity crowd of 25,475 at Rhein-Neckar Arena.
O'Reilly, a native of East Brunswick. N.J., lined a screaming, 30-yarder from the right side into the upper left-hand corner of the goal in the 12th minute to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead. The goal was O'Reilly's 30th in international competition. O'Reilly scored for the second consecutive World Cup, having also tallied during the 2007 competition.
The U.S. team, which also includes former Virginia standouts Lori Lindsey and Becky Sauerbrunn and ex-UNC star Tobin Heath, improved to 2-0 in this year's World Cup and clinched a spot among the final eight. Lindsey joined O'Reilly in Saturday's starting lineup. Heath also played extensively after O'Reilly went to the sidelines about 15 minutes into the second half.
