Maryland's McDowell named ACC Women's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Feb. 24, 2011

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Maryland senior defender Caitlin McDowell has been named the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year and heads up the sport’s All-ACC Academic Team, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.

All 11 league schools that compete in women’s soccer are represented on this year’s All-ACC Academic Team, which includes two student-athletes that earned 2010 All-America honors. The All-ACC Academic Team also includes 12 players that were named first- or second-team All-ACC. Three were named Academic All-America by CoSIDA/ESPN, and 10 earned All-District Academic honors.

McDowell, a senior marketing major from Plano, Texas, started at right back for the Terrapins last season after playing her first three seasons at midfield. McDowell’s 2,068 minutes played were the most among Maryland’s field players, and she scored a career-high 23 points while helping her team to an 18-2-3 season that included a runner-up ACC finish and the program’s first-ever No. 1 NCAA Regional seed.

A three-time member of the All-ACC Academic Team, McDowell became the first Maryland women’s soccer player to earn Academic All-America honors when she was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN second team last fall. McDowell was also a first-team All-District II Academic Team selection and earned Dean’s List honors in each of her first seven semesters.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
