Greensboro, N.C.—Virginia’s First Varsity Four Crew was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Crew of the Week Presented by Cherolet Wednesday after defeating No. 1-ranked Princeton, 19th-ranked Tennessee and Columbia last Saturday at Princeton, N.J.
The ACC Crew of the Week honor was the first this year for Virginia’s First Varsity Boat which is composed of coxswain Sarah Jordan (Flourtown, Pa.), and rowers Ruth Retzinger (Cincinnati, Ohio), Kaity McCullough (Campbell, Calif.), Chelsea Simpson (Carlisle, Pa.) and Susanne Grainger (London, Ontario, Canada).
UVa’s First Varsity Four won handily by almost 11 seconds to finish with a time of 8:01.5 to Princeton’s 8:12.5, with Tennessee finishing third (8:17.0) and Columbia in fourth (8:29.7)
The Virginia’s First Varsity Four Crew is now 6-2 on the season, having defeated No 1 Princeton, second-ranked Stanford, 7th-ranked Michigan State 11th-ranked Ohio State, 15th-ranked Michigan and 17th-ranked UCLA, with losses only to third-ranked Southern California and No. 4 California.
Virginia, the 2011 ACC Rowing Champions and ranked 5th nationally in the most recent Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association poll, captured two of five races against the top-ranked Tigers, winning in the 4V8+, but dropping the First, Second and Third Varsity Eight races.
Virginia will next be in action on Saturday, May 15, facing 20th-ranked Notre Dame and Louisville in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
